The next   Conversation  will be DEC  12,    2019, 7 – 8:30pm:   The Art and Science: STEAM Powered. STEAM takes STEM to the next level, allowing students to connect their learning in science, technology, engineering and math with art practices, providing a wide pallet of learning. The panel will discuss how learners can explore the world around them, develop and create innovative solutions to problems, think deeply, work collaboratively, and communicate the results.

Susan Buroker is an interdisciplinary artist.  Susan’s work focuses on bringing the arts and sciences together to ignite new ideas and generate critical thinking. Susan’s foundation is in the visual arts and she has enjoyed a career in commissioned artworks, illustration assignments, creative direction, and exhibitions. Ms. Buroker holds a Master of Fine Arts- Interdisciplinary Arts degree from Goddard College. Susan’s art is informed by studies crossing different disciplines and ideas that range from social issues to ecological imbalances. 

As a teaching artist Ms. Buroker teaches “Creating Action” through art to encourage community and public participation as a means of bringing about collective thinking. Ms. Burokers’ desire is to affect change through art by engaging in dialogue to empower individuals. Her work has appeared in NY Times, Leonia Journal and various newspapers and journals.

Lorraine Sopp is a retired Fine Arts Coordinator from the Brentwood School District. She has just completed nine years as the Project Coordinator for two federally-funded, Arts in Education Model for Development and Dissemination (AEMDD) grants, C3 and C3 Squared. L. Sopp is a NYSLS trainer for the Visual Arts and is currently completing her certification as an Arts Integration Specialist.

Abigail Holmes, Captain of Huntington High School Robotics Team 5016, has been participating in FIRST Robotics Competition for five years. With initiatives spanning from developing the team's safety protocol to creating an international Girl Scout badge program, Abigail was one of ten students worldwide to be honored with the 2019 FIRST Dean's List Award. Abigail is currently a senior at Huntington High School.

 

 

Eric Reynolds is the Director of Fine and Performing Arts for the Huntington Union Free School District, a position that he has held since July 2016. In Huntington, Mr. Reynolds is responsible for all instructional and operational aspects of the visual art, music and theater programs for over 4,500 students in grades kindergarten through twelve. Also, as a collaborator with local organizations, Mr. Reynolds has maintained and expanded relationships with the Huntington Arts Council and Heckscher Museum. Prior to his appointment in Huntington, Mr. Reynolds served as the district music coordinator and music teacher for the Sag Harbor school district. While in Sag Harbor, Mr. Reynolds was credited for administering initiatives of the music program including designing, implementing, and teaching the Advanced Placement Music Theory and International Baccalaureate Music courses, and creating the secondary string orchestra program. He was also responsible for directing the high school and sixth grade bands, and conducting the pit orchestras for the middle and high school musical productions.

Mr. Reynolds studied at the Boston University College of Fine Arts, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Trombone Performance and a Master of Music in Music Education degree. He obtained an advanced graduate certificate in educational leadership at Stony Brook University. Before his career in education, Mr. Reynolds enjoyed working in the field of arts administration. Serving in a variety of capacities, Mr. Reynolds has worked for the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Boston Ballet, Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras, New York Youth Symphony Orchestra, and most recently was the Production Manager for the Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival.

These talks take place in our Main Street Gallery, 213 Main Street, Huntington NY 11743 form 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm and are open to the public, admission is  $10 for non-members. $5 for members (contact Kieran Johnson businessmanager@huntingtonarts.org for the discount code).
